As you may know, there are 31 days in October, which makes things a little awkward when planning to write a blog every seven days. I want to keep all the Inktober content together as much as possible, so I’m going to tack on the last three days into this blog post.

## Day 22:

“The Diver”

I went back to inkwash! I felt working with gradation would be easier with wash than with brush pen, and I wanted to have a transition from the light at the top to the darker water at the bottom. The inspiration for this drawing was old diving suits. I think their design looks pretty cool. It’s interesting to me how their design echoes that of a space suit. It seems the obvious design for protecting a full human body from a hostile environment is a round stiff helmet and a baggy jumpsuit.

There is a tiny story here. The diver is distracted by the small fish while a larger predator lurks behind him. I want to do more illustrations that contain stories.

This drawing somehow took only an hour total, with 15 minutes of that for the sketch. It definitely felt like longer!

## Day 23:

“Girl and Puppy”

I actually drew this one on the same day as “The Diver”. Inkwash takes a long time to dry, so between layers I worked on this one on the opposite page. It’s just a simple, cute picture of a girl posing as if for a photograph with a small puppy by her side. For me, this has a casual summer vibe. I used black brush pen for the outline after all the inkwash layers were complete. I’m really happy with how the lines turned out, especially on her legs. It almost has a kind of Japanese woodblock style to it. I want to work on being more consistent with how I use line weights like this.

This was another easy and quick drawing, only 40 minutes from start to finish. Ten minutes of that time was for the pencil sketch.

## Day 24:

“Harpy Queen”

This is definitely one of my favorites this month! I regret that her pose was cut off because of the paper size, but I like the way the wings and bird feet turned out. I also think this is one of the more successful pieces in the balance of grey and black lines. For most of these drawings, I start with grey, then add black over top. I’ve noticed that I’m somewhat afraid of leaving outlines grey because I think they won’t stand out enough. Even this image probably depends too much on black outlines, but I think it’s a step in the right direction.

I spent more time on this drawing, about 90 minutes total. The sketch took 20 minutes of that time. I think the extra time went to drawing each individual feather!

## Day 25:

“The Genie and Ella”

This one started off as an idea. I wanted to try moving a genie to a different setting, such as the story of Cinderella. Instead of being trapped in a lamp, the genie is trapped in a teapot. Cinderella is cleaning when she accidentally releases the genie. I still really like this concept, but I’m less than satisfied with its execution here. I drew this a bit quickly since I was still trying to catch up and I had already spent an hour and a half on “Harpy Queen”. With more time, I’d like to make the space less vague and not have the genie floating almost on top of Cinderella. Still, it was good to challenge myself to draw a man’s face and it was fun drawing the cobblestone floor.

I really struggled with this one. The sketch took 30 minutes, plus inking it was completed in 70 minutes.

## Day 26:

“The Messenger”

Clearly I haven’t had enough of drawing birds. If you count the harpy, that’s three this month! I just like the pattern of feathers on bird wings. This one is different from usual in that the angle is above the subject, and let me tell you, it was a challenge to get the aerial view of the river right! I don’t think it’s a full success, but it was a good attempt. Next time, I won’t skip the perspective grid!

This one also contains a small story. The small messenger (or is it a large bird?) is on an urgent errand to bring a message from far away. What’s the message? That’s for you to imagine! I don’t have a more specific story attached to this drawing, but I like the implications, it’s a good jumping off point for ideas.

The pencil sketch took 25 minutes (trying to figure out the landscape!) In total, it took 80 minutes to complete.

## Days 28-29:

Alright, as I said on the first week, I don’t want to post any drawings that I feel aren’t up to a reasonable standard. The first of these was made as part of an experiment with recording video while drawing. I have a long way to go to get a proper set-up going! I think because the angle in which I was drawing was a bit unnatural, it didn’t turn out well. It’s certainly not the worst drawing I’ve ever done, but it is extremely mediocre.

The second failed drawing is based on an idea that I think is interesting, but wasn’t executed well for whatever reason. I was tired that day! I’m going to give it another shot at a later date.

## Day 29:

“Deer Woman”

This one is kind of on the border for me. I can’t say I hate it, but I feel like it’s a little boring. I really like the idea of humans with horns or antlers, and I’ve made many drawings on the same theme! I think for this one it’s just so static. All the focus is on her face and the antlers, which I rendered to a pretty good level, in my opinion, but I didn’t know what to put in the background. I wish I had drawn her doing something or reacting to something. At this point, I was definitely feeling the burnout at the end of the challenge! It takes a lot of brain power to think of a new idea worth drawing to this level every day! (For me, at least!) I drew this one also because I had two sub-par drawings in a row and wanted to have something to make up for it!

This drawing took 50 minutes to complete, 18 of which were for the pencil sketch. I think a chunk of that was looking up antler references and trying to get both sides to match.

## Day 30:

“Pet Rabbit”

You can see that I’m feeling less inspired with this one too. It’s not that far off the “Girl and Puppy” from earlier this week! However, this one is actually based on a thumbnail sketch I did the month before. I did have a burst of energy to add in some plants to the background, which I think was a good choice. They really help ground the drawing and make it feel more complete. I also had fun drawing the edge of the pleated skirt.

This took approximately an hour to finish, 15 minutes for the sketch. Actually, I sketched in the plants after I’d already finished inking the figure, so it was probably slightly longer on the pencil stage.

## Day 31:

“Nap Under the Mushrooms”

The last day! The last drawing! (For Inktober, that is.) More tiny people in big worlds. I wanted to draw something peaceful and relatively easy, but definitely with a background. It’s a bit loose, but I still like it. It’s a little hard to see, but there is a ladybug friend hanging out next to the fairy.

This took about an hour in total, 10 minutes of which was for the pencil sketch.

And that’s a wrap! I’m really glad I finished Inktober this year, even though there were some rough patches. My intention with this was to get back into the habit of drawing and figure out what I like drawing and where I need to improve. All in all, I feel I’ve succeeded on these points. I want to take more time for more polished pieces in the next couple months and work on being more consistent.

Week Four of Inktober 2022

This week was even more of a rollercoaster than week two! I spent way more time on a few of these drawings, but then burnt out for drawing on other days. Still, I’m proud of this week for two drawings that are on double page spreads! I want to do more of this.

## Day 15:

“The Dragon’s Gift”

You may have noticed that I like dragons. Dragons are cool. I like that they resemble lizards, I like when they’re huge, ancient, keepers of knowledge. I like when they’re forces of nature and awe-inspiring avatars of destruction. I like when they’re tiny and pet-sized. I tend to draw Western-style dragons more often, but I like Asian-style dragons too.

This dragon is one of the gigantic Western-style ones. A girl has come to ask for something. The dragon gives her a gift to help her. I don’t know what she needs or what gift she receives, but I like her courage in approaching this terrifying creature for aid.

I’ve realized that I’m not good at keeping track of how long it takes to make each sketch, so I made an effort to do that more this week. This drawing took approximately an hour total.

## Day 16:

“Puppy”

One of my former coworkers retired recently. She is so helpful and compassionate, and really helped me to settle into my job when I first started working there. I wanted to give her something as a “thank you” for being a great coworker. This is what I ended up drawing for her.

At first, I wasn’t sure if I wanted to do just the outline of the dog, or take the time to detail the fur as well. I decided to go for it on the second option and luckily it turned out OK!

## Day 17:

“Mermaid”

I like mermaids as much as the next person. I too wanted to become a mermaid when I was in elementary school. As I’ve grown older, I’ve started to appreciate a more “fishy” design for mermaids. In pop culture, mermaids look like Ariel: they have long, flowing hair, shellfish bikinis to cover their breasts, and simple fishtails with a single large fin at the end. I like the idea of a mermaid that doesn’t have hair or mammary glands, is covered more with scales, and has extra fins like you would see on most fish. Mind you, this design is still not super realistic. Fish don’t need shoulders or long bony arms since they don’t need to climb trees. For me, though, this hits the sweet spot between humanoid and monstrous.

I imagine this is a teenage mermaid. She pierces her fins and wears trendy seaweed clothes.

Somehow, this ended up taking me three hours! I did spend one full hour on the pencil sketch and making sure everything was in a good place. I can’t tell you why the inks took so long. I did put a lot of attention to making sure the tentacle hair and the scales looked alright, so I guess that’s where the time went.

## Day 18:

“Snowy Evening”

I’m not really crazy about this one. You’ll notice most of the page is white for the snow. It’s because I wasn’t really in the mood for drawing, but a few days behind. It shows someone walking through a snowy evening towards a house on a hill. This one is also based on an old thumbnail from a few years back. I still like the idea, so I might do a more polished version of this again in the future. It took about 30 minutes to finish this illustration.

## Day 19:

“Minotaur”

I finished reading _Piranesi_ by Susanna Clarke this week, a really excellent book! I won’t go too much into the story here because it’s better to experience it for yourself. In the book, there is a motif of a labyrinth and minotaurs (though there’s no actual minotaur in the story, so don’t get too excited). That was rattling around in my brain when I drew this.

I looked up a few different reference pictures for the bull’s head, so it’s not based on any one breed. The horns were really fun to draw! I also read _Circe_ by Madeline Miller earlier this year, which features a very fierce and violent minotaur, but I wanted to draw a more peaceful one in contrast to how they’re usually portrayed. What’s more peaceful than making a daisy chain? He’s just chilling, enjoying life outside the labyrinth.

Usually when I’m drawing in brush pen, I start with the pencil sketch, then grey ink, then black ink. For this one, I did the black ink first and it was kind of a mistake. I didn’t feel as confident with my lines as I usually do. It was good to experiment, but from here one I go back to my usual process. This one took about 30 minutes to complete.

“Fire Mage”

Trying to catch up, so back to something simple! This is actually a redraw of my day four image. I had trouble with the lighting on that one, so I kept it a lot simpler for this one. Her twisty ponytail echoes the flames. The shawl is pretty simple, but I like how it turned out.

## Day 21:

“Reading Under the Tree”

I liked the way the tree from day nine turned out so much I had to bring that technique back. Here, we can see more of the tree and the woman underneath it. Simple, peaceful, and fun to draw. This took a breezy 40 minutes from pencil sketch to finish, about 10 minutes of which was for the pencil sketch.

Week Three of Inktober 2022

As is usually the case, this is the week where things start to go off the rails. I’m usually pretty consistent for the first week, but the novelty has worn off and now we’re on the grind. I am determined to make 31 ink illustrations by the end of the month, but there have been days where I didn’t manage to finish an illustration and therefore had to make up for it the next day. I will get better at this!!

## Day 08:

“The Sun Prince”

I don’t always plan out what I want to draw before I start working on the sketch. In this case, I decided to draw a portrait. As I was marking out where the head should be, it seemed a nice day to draw a crown, but I didn’t want it to be a stereotypical modern European crown. I wanted something simpler and older looking, forged out of metal alone without jewels or velvet. I thought a sun motif would be cool. Those bean-shaped protrusions on the side were supposed to be discs like a full moon, but viewed at an angle. Next, I had to decide the appearance of the figure. Since I was going with a sun/celestial objects theme, I decided a round, poofy afro would be a fitting hair choice. I went with a somewhat modern-looking uniform as a contrast to the more simplistic crown. I imagine he’s some kind of prince to a warrior culture.

## Day 09:

“Girl and Fox”

This is when the lack of motivation started to set in. I wanted to do something super simple and within my wheelhouse of usual subjects. I like foxes, I like wavy hair, and I like trees. As you can see, that’s like 90% of this drawing. I did look up reference photos of foxes just to make sure I remembered how to draw one. I really like how the tree branches and leaves turned out.

“Michael Almost Catches a Falling Star”

So, I just finished reading How’s Moving Castle by Diana Wynne Jones for the 800th time. This is one of my favorite books since my childhood. I know a lot of people are more familiar with the film version directed by Hayao Miyazaki, so this might look a little different than what you would expect. In the book, Michael is the 15 year old apprentice to the wizard Howl. In the scene I’ve illustrated here, Michael is out in the marshes with the protagonist of the book, Sophie. They are attempting to catch a falling star for Michael to use in a spell.

> “And there was the falling star. Sophie could see it, a little white descending flame shape a few yards beyond the dark movements that were Michael. The bright shape was coming down slowly now, and it looked as if Michael might catch it. [...] Sophie could see him outlined against the star’s light. The star was drifting level with Michael’s hands and only a step or so beyond. It was looking back at him nervously. How odd! Sophie thought. It was made of light, it lit up a white ring of grass and reeds and black pools round Michael, and yet it had big, anxious eyes peering backward at Michael, and a small, pointed face.”

This section of the book really stuck in my imagination. One of Jones’ strengths is her ability to describe a scene simply but vividly. This book is high on my list of ones I might want to do a full series of illustrations for.

In my drawing, we can’t see the star’s face because we’re looking at Michael’s. I also drew the star far closer to being caught than was implied in the text for dramatic effect. The lighting was the most fun aspect of this, though a bit challenging!

## Day 11:

“Sunflowers”

This was another where I decided to go with my strengths: wavy hair, simple dress, flowers. Sunflowers are such cheerful flowers! A few years ago, I took a trip to Hokkaido, Japan with some friends. We rented a car to drive across the island from Sapporo to Shiretoko in August. Along the way, we stopped next to this huge field of sunflowers. It was amazing! They stretched as far as the eye could see. That trip is such a good memory for me, so I’m channeling a bit of that in this image.

## Day 12:

“The Owl Keeper”

To keep my motivation up, I went with another compositionally simple illustration featuring wavy hair and a bird! My original idea was to draw a kindly witch, but as I was sketching in the owl I realized how sharp its talons were and that it would be a good idea to wear some sort of protection, like a falconer. I looked up a reference for the owl, but the shoulder pad is my own design, so I hope it looks somewhat realistic!

Owls are such pretty birds, it was a lot of fun drawing this one.

## Day 13:

“Tattoos”

My one goal for this image was to draw tattoos. As I’ve been using the grey brush pen more this week, I’ve noticed that it would be a good tool for replicating the look of tattooed lines on skin for a black and white illustration. I wanted to try it out! I didn’t have a solid idea of what kind of tattoos she should have, but you can’t go wrong with dragons. (When I was a teenager, my dream was getting a dragon tattoo. As I’ve gotten older, the urge for such is not strong enough to balance out the pain and cost of a tattoo, but there’s still that part of me that likes the idea.)

On her left arm is a dragon, on her right arm is a phoenix. There are other smaller tattoos of various animals. In this image, you can see a bat and a mouse. Her story is that she can transform into the animals she has as tattoos.

## Day 14:

“Wood Elf”

Finishing up the week with another portrait! Also with curly hair…and there are trees in the background. What sort of accessories should wood elves have? I’m thinking leaves in their hair, pieces of wood, and wrist guards made of bark. I don’t actually know if bark would be good for making into wrist guards, so if that’s too crazy just think of them as made from leather.

Week Two of Inktober 2022

Hello and welcome to my blog! My plan is to make this a weekly thing. I’d like this to be a space to show off notable bits of my sketchbook, doodles about daily life, or whatever’s on my mind.

It’s October, and the beginning of a new phase for me. I’ve started up my daily sketchbook again and I’m using Inktober as an opportunity to start posting my work online and motivation to be drawing regularly. My hope is that I can use some of my sketches from this month as a springboard to more finished works. I still don’t know exactly what I want to be doing, I just know that I like drawing and I want to get better at it!

I’m not following a theme or a prompt list (I don’t usually), I’m just taking it one day at a time.

## Day 01:

Full disclosure, I did the day one and day two drawings on the same day, October 2nd. Actually it worked out well since I could work on one while the ink on the other was drying. I started with an underlying sketch in graphite, then put down layers of inkwash, building up the values. Finally, I added black lines with a nib pen.

I had no idea what I wanted to draw on day one. I’ve been so out of the habit of a daily sketchbook that I didn’t have much floating around in my mind. So, I turned to old sketchbook pages for inspiration.

## Day 02:

I used the same inkwash and nib pen techniques as I did on the day one drawing. It was nice getting to use inkwash again! I’ve rarely used it since my university days because it’s so difficult. Once it’s down, it’s down, there’s no lifting it if you make a mistake. That’s why it’s important to build up values slowly or know exactly where you want the values to be.

For this drawing, I was again inspired by an older page of my sketchbook, also from 2020.

This time, I was thinking about dragons, as you do, and what it would be like if dragons were domesticated. And, say, the size of dogs or horses. I’m certain that Anne McCaffery’s _Dragonsong_ series was floating around in my brain somewhere. I also remember a picture book I saw in the library once, millions of years ago, that explored a similar concept with dinosaurs. (Not _Dinotopia_ by James Gurney, though that’s also worth mentioning here.) I wish I could remember the name or the author of that book.

I decided to combine it with a famous portrait by John Singer Sargent, with a vaguely Regency-era twist. Why all these things mashed together? I really can’t tell you. Sometimes that’s just how inspiration works. Sargent is one of my favorite painters, and I love the work of Jane Austen, so there you go.

## Day 03:

Again on day three, I’m using inkwash with nib pen, because why fix what’s not broken? I’m having fun using the medium, and it’s a good challenge for me.

There isn’t a first doodle for this one. Instead, I wanted to focus on drawing a character in a pose, doing something, in contrast to the first two days. I’m not very good at playing the ukulele, but I deeply respect people who are, and musical people in general, so I wanted to portray someone like that. I used a combination of reference photos from online for the placement of the hands, the rest is from my head. I really liked the way her hair turned out and the rendering of the stripes in her skirt. I wish I had pushed the contrast in the values a little more, but I was afraid of going too dark and ruining it. This is one that I think has some potential for a colored drawing later on, maybe added digitally.

## Days 04 and 05:

Look, I promise I did do ink drawings on both these days. They just didn’t turn out the way I wanted. I was maybe a little too ambitious on the day four drawing, and my skill didn’t rise to meet the occasion. I thought about sharing them anyway, just to be like, “See! Everyone has a bad drawing day!,” but in the end, I don’t want to clutter the page with drawings I don’t think are up to par. If I do a better version later on, I might post it!

## Day 06:

Now I’m starting to be more in the groove, and not so dependent on older doodles for ideas. I recently listened to the audiobook for Susanna Clarke’s “Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell” for the second time, and it was definitely on my mind. I love the way she describes magic and faeries.

One of their characteristics in her work is that they have a closer communication with animals, plants, natural features, etc. So in my drawing, we see a faerie lady speaking with a bird ally. Why is her hair blowing in the wind? Because it’s fun. Why are there outlines of flowers or leaves in the background? Again, it’s fun. Also, I try to avoid doing a simple solid background when I can, because it’s boring.

## Day 07:

I’m finally switching it up a little with the media I’m using. I love inkwash, but it’s kind of a pain to set up and clean up. This drawing was made with brush pens. I still did an underlying graphite sketch, then went over it with the grey Pilot brush pen, then added the black with a Pentel brush pen. What this means is that there’s only one value of the grey, so I have to make sure there’s a good balance between black, white, and grey, without relying on other lighter or darker shades. In some ways, this is easier because it’s less complex. It does mean that I’m more reliant on line than I have been in the previous drawings. I really liked how this one turned out!

As for the subject matter, I’ve always liked plate armor. Actually, armor in general is pretty interesting. It’s so different from daily wear, and it makes for a cool silhouette. This one is a fairly simple, practical suit of armor, but I like some of the more decorative styles too. The metallic texture is fun, lots of contrast and bright highlights. I added flowers because, why not? I like the contrast of delicate flowers with strong protective gear.
